As the usual settings for treatment of psychiatric patients diminish, the ER is picking up the slack. However, since the availability of psychiatric consultants to the ER doctor varies, ER physicians are expected to handle all manner of emergencies, including behavioral. Editor-in-Chief Zun (emergency medicine, Chicago Medical School), and his associate editors, Chepenik (psychiatry, Yale U. School of Medicine) and Mallory (emergency medicine, U. of Louisville School of Medicine) designed the book to support ER doctors as they labor in some 4500 ERs throughout the country. Their goal is to assist ER doctors as they care for psychiatric patients and to provide support for practitioners in settings where there are behavioral emergencies. Its 57 chapters are divided into six sections: general considerations for psychiatric care in the emergency department; evaluation of the psychiatric patient; psychiatric illnesses; treatment of the psychiatric patient; special populations; and administrator of psychiatric care. Their target audience is psychologists, psychiatrists, ER and psychiatric nurses, and other mental health workers. It can be used as a reference as well as a textbook.
