Juncos, a clinical psychologist and performance coach, and Pona, a voice teacher and vocalist in Austria, offer a guide for musicians to using acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to deal with various psychological issues. They describe the unique psychological challenges that musicians face, the acceptance and commitment therapy model, and the concept of psychological flexibility; research support for the therapy; using mindfulness to strengthen attention, strengthening emotional acceptance and willingness, using defusion to create artistic presence, creating a more flexible sense of self and musician identity, identifying what is most valuable as a performer, and making the commitment to engage in valued actions; and applications of the therapy to areas like performance, performance anxiety, other occupational stressors, well-being, and for music teachers.
