The use of algae for biofuel production is expected to play an important role in securing an alternative energy source in the near future, particularly in light of depleting fossil fuel reserves and the adverse environmental impact of fossil fuels. Algae presents a viable alternative because the production of algae for fuel, unlike other agro-based biofuels, does not compete with food production. Because of the vast availability of algae, coupled with climate change linked to fossil fuels, the use of algal biofuels in the near future is inevitable.
