Interpretation of Structural Geological Maps: Simple to Advanced Level provides a highly visual manual with many maps and solutions that have not been presented elsewhere for structural geology. Covering rotational faults, listric faults, superposed folds, and other advanced geological formations, along with multicomponent formations that are the most difficult to interpret, this book will guide those who use maps in their work to see two-dimensional geological features in a three-dimensional space and mentally extend them beyond the limits of maps and sections. It includes 21st century mapping capabilities such as LIDAR to provide problems and solutions to interpreting a variety of maps that are available but need specific skills to interpret.

Interpretation of Structural Geological Maps: Simple to Advanced Level is a valuable resource for any students, academics, researchers or professionals who work with complex level maps, in order to help them understand how to interpret a variety of structural formations and especially multicomponent formations.

  • Presents a thorough guide on interpretation of maps
  • Includes difficult maps involving superposed folds, rotational faults, listric faults and multi-component maps
  • Presents a self-learning guide of both problems and solutions, with no external instruction required
1. Toposheet Map Interpretation
2. Unconformities - Map Interpretation
3. Folds - Map Interpretation
4. Faults - Map Interpretation
5. Multicomponent map interpretation - Unconformities, folds and faults
6. Outcrop completion exercises
7. Maps of applied and technological aspects
Soumyajit Mukherjee is a professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India. He received his PhD in geology and MTech in applied geology from IIT Roorkee in 2007 and 2002, respectively, and received his BSc in geology from Presidency College (Kolkata) in 1999. He was a recipient of the Hutchison Young Scientist Award from IUGS in 2004. He served as the guest researcher at the Hans Ramberg Tectonic Lab, Uppsala University, from 2005 to 2006. Dr. Mukherjee, a structural geologist and tectonician, has performed fieldwork, microstructural studies, and analogue and analytical modeling, mainly on ductile shear kinematics and collisional tectonics. His research and editorial experience spans 15 years and so far he has authored and coedited 14 books and thematic volumes.
