Encompassing tropical and temperate forests, arid lands, and the Gulf of California, northern Mexico is one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world. Representing the collaborative efforts of ecologists in the U.S. and Mexico, this volume provides an overview of the area's biological wealth and identifies challenges to its long-term conservation. Early chapters cover the history and geography of northern Mexico and outline the legal framework for the protection of its biodiversity. Other contributions (23 in all) address factors affecting the survival of specific types of plants and animals at both regional and local levels. This book describes the biodiversity and biogeography of nothern Mexico, documents the biological importance of regional ecosystems and the impacts of human land use on the conservation status of plants and wildlife. It should become the standard source document for the conservation status of species and ecosystems in this region, which is of unusual biological interest because of its high biodiversity and highly varied landscape and biological zonation.
