This is the fourth of five volumes constituting a comprehensive reference on the Hindu religious traditions. The articles are in-depth critical research studies arranged by theme--making this reference far superior to an encyclopedia of brief entries arranged alphabetically. Editor Knut A. Jacobsen (history of religions, U. of Bergen, Norway) has shepherded a team of associate editors and expert contributors in the preparation of this work. This fourth volume begins with historical perspectives starting with the Indus civilization (-1750 BCE)--its rise and fall, the Harappan language and religion, and the Indus script. Following is treatment of six periods, ending with British rule (1757-1947) and independent India (1947 to the present). Approximately 40 individuals are thoroughly profiled. The section on Hinduism's relation to other religions and traditions comprises articles on Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Jainism, Sikhism, tribal religions, and Zoroastrianism. Contemporary issues are treated in articles on animal rights, bioethics, ecology, human rights, the internet, the modern legal framework, New Age spirituality, science, sexuality, tolerance of religious pluralism, and tourism, among other topics. Recenzijos

'it is not an empty claim in the Preface that _the depth and breadth of information provided are unmatched by any reference work on Hinduism_(...) On the whole, the editors and the competent project team at Brill have coped admirably with the challenges, preparing an impressive list of entries, enlisting a competent team of (as many as 155) accomplished scholars, applying a uniform style to the encyclopedia, achieving consistency in the use of diacritics and weaving the diverse contributions into a coherent whole.' Jan Filipskż, Oriental Institute, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Oriental Archive 81 (2013)

'As a product of in-depth and critical scholarship, Brill's Encyclopedia of HInduism is unparalleled in its breadth, depth and reliability. As in every scholarly undertaking, especially an interdisciplinary one touching upon Indology, religious studies, history, anthropology, sociology, art history, and other academic disciplines, there is always ample scope for improvement and further research. But suffice it to say that, as of now, together with the last two substantial volumes already in print, the present compendium may be taken as a dernier cri in critical scholarship, a veritable jńnavpi (well of knowledge) for future generations to replenish.'
