The Camberwell Assessment of Need for Mothers (CAN-M) is a tool for assessing the needs of pregnant women and mothers with severe mental illness. It is a modification of the Camberwell Assessment of Need, the most widely used needs assessment for people with severe mental health problems. The CAN-M assesses met and unmet needs in 26 areas, covering a full range of social, physical health and mental health domains. The perspectives of staff and service users are assessed so that care planning is fully informed. Comprehensive versions are included for research and for clinical use, as well as a short summary version suitable for both clinical and research use.
This book includes a review of the needs of pregnant women and mothers with severe mental illness, the rating scales, descriptions of how they were developed and their psychometric properties, administration details, a full training programme, guidance on scoring and blank assessment forms (for all three versions) for photocopying.

Children whose parents have an affective disorder have a 40 percent chance of developing depression by the age of 20. Other studies have shown that mental illnesses in parents affect not only their children's mental health but their ability to learn and their general quality of life. Here the authors adapt the popular Camberwell Assessment of Needs (CAN) to women who are mentally ill and either pregnant or rearing children (CAN-M). They explain why practitioners should assess the needs of women during pregnancy and the postnatal period, the needs of those women, the impact of maternal mental illness on the developing child, and the development of the CAN-M and the process of training to use it. The authors provide full instructions on rating and scoring, coversheets, clinical and research versions of the CAN-M along with a short appraisal version, and sets of training overheads and vignettes.
