China is a continent-sized economy and society with substantial diversity across its different regions. As the countrys economic and social transformations continue, the dynamics within and relationships between Chinas regions are changing too. These changes are partly the result of and responses to changes at a global level, which in turn have impacts beyond Chinas borders. The global interactions economic, political and social of China's regions need to be understood in order to evaluate a changing China.
This book responds to this challenge by looking at the development of Chinas regions in global context. It demonstrates how Chinas regional policy and political economy reflect global developments as much as those domestic to China. In particular, it argues that the changing spatial relations of global political economy (globalization) are both reflected in and influenced by the evolution of Chinas regions and their global interactions, thus demonstrating Chinas ongoing integration into the global economy.
The book also has a strong emphasis on tracing the evolution of regional policy in China and its implications, and includes a thorough discussion of policy. It will therefore also be of value in understanding policy-making processes in China and how they have changed.
