Initiated in 2001 by the Ford Foundation, the Global Service Institute, together with the Center for Social Development (CSD) at Washington U. in St. Louis, aims to expand the research knowledge base on civic service as a form of volunteerism around the world. Out of these efforts generally, and a 2003 conference hosted by the CSD under the same title as this volume more specifically, come these 12 papers presented by McBride (George Warren Brown School of Social Work, Washington U. in St. Louis) and Sherraden (social development, Washington U. in St. Louis). Papers explore national service programs and their social effects in Nigeria, Israel, and the United States; present psychological, educational, and comparative perspectives of civic service across the life course; discuss issues of transnational civic service; and consider the state of civic service research.
