Over 20 percent of Union soldiers were German-American, and more than one third of these 'Dutchmen' were born and educated in Germany. This book presents a firsthand account by a Civil War Dutchman who fought in Missouri and Arkansas in 1862. Although the author has a northern point of view, he is also critical of the Union Army's operational practices and does not display the sense of nationalistic or religious fervor of many of his compatriots. An introduction relates the discovery of the manuscript and discusses issues of translation. The book is illustrated with b&w historical photos, illustrations, and political cartoons.
