Thurston (1946-2012) changed the landscape of mathematics in at least two ways, editors say. First, his original ideas changed and connected whole subjects in mathematics, from low-dimensional topology to the theory of rational maps to hyperbolic geometry and beyond. Second, through both his written and non-written work, he changed the way people think about and encounter mathematics. The goal of the four-volume set is to gather (almost) all of his written work in one place, with commentary, to shed light on the long intellectual journey of the unique thinker. The reproduced papers, retaining their original page numbers, are arranged in chronological order within the large themes of foliations; surfaces and mapping class groups; differential geometry; three-dimensional manifolds; complexity, construction, and computers; geometric group theory; dynamics and complex analysis; computer science; papers for general audiences; and miscellaneous. The fourth volume presents his lecture notes for the "Geometry and Topology of Three-Manifolds" course he taught at Princeton University during the 1977-78 academic year.
