This concise and comprehensive guide describes the complexities, key concepts and mechanisms of the immune system in a simplified manner. The book provides a clear and accessible overview of the body's defence mechanisms, covering various aspects such as the structure and function of immune cells, the mechanisms of antigen recognition and response, the regulation of immune responses through the release of cytokines, and dysfunctions of the immune system which lead to autoimmunity and hypersensitivity. Additionally, it covers different immunological techniques and the latest developments in immunotherapy, including the use of monoclonal antibodies. The multiple-choice questions and answers provided at the end of each chapter will further enhance the understanding of the book's readership.
Dr Seema Tripathy, a biotechnology researcher, worked at the National Institute of Science Education and Research, India, and the Siksha 'O' Anusandhan University, India. She obtained her postgraduate degree from the University of Hyderabad, India, and a PhD from Utkal University, India. Her doctoral research focuses on the development and differentiation of fish embryonic stem cells. Leveraging her expertise, she devised a method to isolate stem cells from breastmilk and urine. She also developed a cost-effective culture protocol for breastmilk-derived mesenchymal stem cells, a promising source for tissue regeneration. She has authored a book on the human anatomy and physiological systems, a number of research publications, and has filed a couple of patents. The lack of simplified immunology resources prompted her to write a book tailored for undergraduate and postgraduate students.Ms Rashmi Rekha Sahu, a biochemistry graduate from Ravenshaw Autonomous University, India, co-authored the book. The need for a book that describes concepts and mechanisms of immunology in a simple manner inspired her to write this book on immunology.
