Recenzijos

I met Grantley Haynes when we were both board members of the governments National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse (NTA). It was established in 2001 because of the inability of government departments to work together in tackling the massive problem of substance misuse in England. Better treatment provision for those involved in substance misuse was a crucial part of Prime Minister Tony Blairs strategy for improving the lives of all those living in some of the most deprived and neglected parts of our cities. The NTA was successful, and Grantley's contribution was essential to improving drug services, particularly in enhancing treatment for crack and other stimulants, which was crucial to the program's success.

Grantley shone with his total commitment to the individuals, families, and communities most deeply affected by drug misuse. His other big focus and passion in life has been music. His skills in developing young musical talent and helping musicians succeed in their careers are well recognised, particularly in Birmingham. This grass-roots involvement in music completely complements his goal of community improvement and development.

Grantley is, by nature, a gentle, charming, and softly-spoken person, which makes him all the more powerful when he decides something needs to be done. He can also speak out powerfully if he thinks people are short-changed or neglected.

He is, in short, one of the most impressive and delightful individuals I have ever met - Gabriel Scally - Visiting Professor of Public Health, University of Bristol

I have known Grantley for over 25 years, and we were unlikely soul-mates - he, immersed in music and drug treatment, me, someone who had spent a career locking people up.  We bonded over a desire to help people and realised we had more in common than we ever thought - not least an association with Brixton and Reggae!

He became my teacher and inspiration in the world of drug treatment. His passion was infectious, and his good humour in tough times was inspiring.

Where he saw failing, he brought solutions that were always practical and inclusive. We travelled widely together alongside others of similar minds and passions. He wanted to change the world and succeeded more than he realised.

The years have not diminished his commitment and enthusiasm and never will. - John Podmore, former governor of HMP Brixton, Belmarsh, Swaleside, is a prison inspector and international criminal justice consultant.

Grantley Haynes began his interest in crack cocaine while on tour in the 1980s, when he witnessed the trail of misery left in the lives of users, families, and their community, as well as the short-term highs that seduced those addicted, noting how closely related heaven and hell could be. He had yet to learn that help or treatment would depend on ones ability to manage the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs of the person receiving treatment, alongside the availability of care.

This story follows the Wheeler Street Crack Outreach team in Birmingham, UK. Their pioneering approach to engaging with users developed at a time when the mere mention of crack would instil fear, and the visible presence of users would make most hearts race. This team responded with empathy.

In this book, Grantley uncovers remarkable new details, dispels myths, and emphasises the most dramatic aspects of his years developing the team, implementing the Birmingham crack cocaine strategy, serving in the Hodge Hill constituency, and serving as a non-executive director at the National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse.

I decided to write this book for many reasons, the primary one being to assist those who may be at home struggling to help someone using crack or cocaine, who may lack the courage to seek help. You may also have a strong interest in the community and work in social services or substance misuse, supporting individuals in need through other charitable, community-led partnerships or statutory organisations.

Legacy has always meant a great deal to me: my mum, dad, sisters, extended family, and those who live abroad alike. I remember not knowing either of my grandfathers and being told about the murder of my mother's father. It hurt immensely, even though I never had the chance to meet him and listen to his stories.

Ultimately, I believe that writing this book allows me to share my journey and love for them in a way that enables them to trace the path I have taken and the sacrifices I have made as I strive to provide them with what I never had. To this end, I have always wished to gather my story in one place so they can look back and find solace when I am no longer there for them.

Imagine me at Leicester University, pursuing my M.A. in Criminology. I was asked to lead a Drugs, Order, and Society seminar. I recall pondering how to approach it when my lecturer mentioned Tackling Drugs Together.
