This publication is a reader and catalogue. It is the companion to the exhibition Democracy X: Marking the Present; Representing the Past held in the Castle galleries of Iziko Museums in Cape Town during 2004 as part of the celebrations to mark a decade of democracy in South Africa. It is a written and visual record of the exhibition. At the same time it explores a range of historical, cultural and political matters related to the exhibition but not confined to it.

A companion to the 2004 exhibition held at the Iziko Museums in Cape Town, this volume is more than a catalog; it also explores historical, cultural and political matters related to the exhibition, which was part of the celebrations marking a decade of democracy in South Africa. Essays accompanying the color representations of the exhibit cover the history of the land from the first traces of humans there to the struggles of the last decade. The contributors address such subjects as African nationalism, the role of education in the attainment of democracy, and the state of the arts in post-apartheid South Africa. Co-published by the U. of South Africa Press and Brill. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
