Kumbier offers this critique of archival practice and suggests approaches to drawing out LGBTQ history in an authentic way from conventional and unconventional archival sources. The introduction and first section establish methods of finding records of queer experience and outline the limitations of various archival forms and the counterstories that can be found. The second half details several archival projects intentionally utilizing bottom-up methods to study the communities of drag kings, Eliza Shapiros DATUM, and queer zines, with an emphasis on beginning archival in the present and seeking the active consent of participants to build a self-voiced representation of current experiences.
