Located atop a hill outside Portsmouth, Fort Nelson was built in the 1860s as part of a chain of fortifications designed to protect the great naval harbor of Portsmouth and its Royal Dockyard from a feared French invasion. Today the fort houses the national collection of artillery, held in trust for by the Royal Armouries, and it has more than three hundred and fifty big guns and historic cannons on display.
