This book represents a synchronic sociolinguistic analysis of gender-related variation in the speech of English and Romanian adolescents. It is motivated by the belief that variation is a characteristic of natural language, and that a comprehensive understanding of language must include a grasp of the nature and function of variation. The book analyses sociolinguistic features of adolescent speech that occur in natural, spontaneous, everyday speech, thus representing a major contribution to the study of language in its social context.
Costin-Valentin Oancea is Assistant Professor of English Linguistics at "Ovidius" University in Constana, Romania. He received a PhD in English Linguistics and an MA in Applied English Linguistics from the University of Bucharest, Romania. He has published various articles in journals such as Bucharest Working Papers in Linguistics, Ethnologia Balkanica, Studii de tiin i cultur, and Analele Universitii Ovidius. Seria filologie. His main research interests include variationist sociolinguistics, language variation and change, language contact, and varieties of English.
