The 22 readings collected here by Milanovic (lead economist at The World Bank Research Department in Washington, DC) offer empirical analyses of issues of globalization and income inequality. Opening articles examine "Globalization I" (the period between 1870 and 1914, characterized by greater movements of labor than "Globalization II") and changes in national and global inequality. Attention then shifts to the contemporary period of neoliberal ascendancy, with readings reviewing and analyzing within-national inequalities in developed countries as well as in China, Russia, India, and Latin America. The next set of articles considers more specifically the questions of how trade, direct foreign investment, and/or outsourcing have impacted within-national income inequalities. The final set of papers shift from discussing within-country inequality to a look at the impact of recent globalization trends on broad global inequality. This outstanding book maps the debates about globalization and inequality: how globalization impacts national inequality and how an open global economy shapes inequality within and across the borders of states. Branko Milanovics collection will become the authoritative source on these complex issues. -- David Held, Durham University, UK
