This work is a research biography in which Hayhoe (London School of Economics, England) describes how he came to develop a methodology and theory for investigating the social settings of blind people. The approach places disabilities such as blindness in relation to broader social and cultural classifications such as ethnicity, gender, class, and nationality. He describes the development of the research, how he conducted fieldwork, the ethical issues that arose, the experiences and behavior of research participants, and other aspects of the study as an example for current and future researchers.
