This is the most comprehensive guide to the identification of the birds of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East yet published. Its importance for birders within and outside the region is difficult to exaggerate. It is the first identification manual to cover all the species to have occurred in the region, nearly 900 in all, illustrating every one (including vagrants and accidentals) and showing the widest range of plumages ever to feature in a European guide. The colour plates (over 350 in total) contain thousands of individual images and are painted by some of Europe's leading bird artists.
The extensive text deals with all aspects of identification from the family level (especially useful for beginners) to the finer points of species identification. Each family introduction is followed by the species accounts and relevant colour plates, with text and plates fully cross-referenced for easy use. Status and habitat are described in detail, and over 600 colour range maps, at a larger size than is normal in field guides, provide clear distributional information.

Identification guide covering all the bird species to have occurred in the European region. The species are covered by family, with each family introduction followed by the relevant colour plates and species accounts and for 625 species there are detailed colour maps within the text.

Recenzijos

"Unrivalled as a single volume guide. It is so thorough that if you can't identify what you have seen from its pages the bird probably doesn't exist. [ The authors] write with authority, flair and wit... First published in 1998, it remains fresh and relevant." Gravesend Reporter (January 2007)
