International contributors from 22 countries explore developments in health education in the formal and non-formal sectors of non-Western, non-English-speaking countries. Some chapters overview major national developments, while others focus on specific case studies and programs. Most highlight the interplay of social, political, economic, and environmental aspects of health issues. The theoretical basis for the book is derived from sociocultural theories of learning by Vygotsky and Wertsch. After an overview chapter on health education in context, regional sections consider the Middle East and the Gulf, Europe, Africa, South Asia, and East Asia. Some topics include health education through extracurricular activities in Lebanon, promoting healthy aging in tea estate communities in Sri Lanka, policies on health and sex education in India, and mental health education in Vietnam. A conclusion offers recommendations. There is no subject index. Taylor is affiliated with the University of New England, Australia. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
