Under the auspices of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, and in co-operation with the German Diabetes Association and the German Society of Angiology, this conference brought together diabetes experts, angiologists, cardiologists, haematologists, pharmacologists and basic researchers in the field of hemostasis. The aim was to emphasize the role of haemostasis in a pathophysiological concept of diabetic angiopathy, and to consider perspectives and limitations of therapeutic interventions on the level of the haemostatic system in the clinical management of diabetic patients. The concept was to demonstrate the specific diabetes problem by using epidemiological data - modern cell biological concepts of hyperactive cellular haemostasis were summarized, and on this basis diagnostic problems and possibilities were discussed.
