Powell, an international educator, and Kusuma-Powell (Center for Cognitive Coaching, Buffalo State College, and Lehigh U.) draw on research and their experiences in international schools to outline strategies, assignments, and activities related to five domains that are key in personalizing learning for students who have different cultural, linguistic, and academic backgrounds: focus on students as learners through systemic examination of their cultural and linguistic identities, learning styles and preferences, and readiness; focus on oneself as a teacher, including cultural biases, preferred teaching style and beliefs, and expectations; focus on the curriculum and concepts that are valuable and accessible to all students and further global competence; focus on assessments to ensure cultural sensitivity and improve the quality of formative data; and focus on relationships with fellow educators who have different experiences, backgrounds, skills, and perspectives.
