Radiologists provide practitioners, residents, and students in the specialty a guide to reporting musculoskeletal trauma seen in radiographs, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. After setting out essential concepts in imaging musculoskeletal trauma, they cover pediatric skeletal trauma, spine, shoulder and proximal humerus, elbow and forearm, wrist and hand, pelvis and proximal femur, knee and tibia and fibula shafts, ankle and foot, and fracture healing and complications of fractures. Clear images are provided with salient features marked. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Offers a well-designed approach to imaging musculoskeletal trauma

Medical imaging plays an important role in identifying fractures and helping the patient return to regular activities as soon as possible. But in order to identify the fracture, and describe all the relevant associated injuries, the radiologist first needs to understand normal anatomy and the mechanisms of fractures. Imaging Musculoskeletal Trauma reviews common fracture and dislocation mechanisms and provides up-to-date guidelines on the use and interpretation of imaging tests.

Designed for use by professionals in radiology, orthopedics, emergency medicine, and sports medicine, this book offers a concise, systematic approach to imaging musculoskeletal trauma. Replete with easily accessible information, including well-designed tables and lists, the book features radiology report checklists for each anatomic site, numerous radiographs and CT and MRI images, simple illustrations for common fracture classification schemes, examples of common and serious injuries in the musculoskeletal system, and a chapter devoted to fracture complications including complications relating to the use of hardware in treating injuries.

This well-designed guide teaches professional and student users to:

  • Identify normal anatomy relevant to interpretation in musculoskeletal studies
  • Describe common fracture and dislocation mechanisms
  • Describe fractures using appropriate terminology
  • Recommend appropriate imaging studies for various clinical situations
  • Use a systematic approach to interpret imaging studies
  • Provide a clear and relevant radiology report
  • Recognize complications associated with fractures and fracture treatment

Complete with on-call issues, common traumas, and specially highlighted "do-not-miss" fractures, this is an invaluable resource for everyone involved with the imaging of musculoskeletal trauma.

Recenzijos

In summary, Imaging Musculoskeletal Trauma Interpretation and Reporting is a very well-written textbook with comprehensive evaluation of fractures and fracture-dislocations of the axial and appendicular skeleton, with minor limitations. This book can be recommended as a useful guideline in radiologic evaluation and interpretation of musculoskeletal trauma cases for radiology trainees, practicing radiologists, and other clinicians with an interest in musculoskeletal trauma.  (Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, 25 February 2014)

Dr. Andrea Donovan is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto and her practice practice as a musculoskeletal radiologist is based at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, the largest trauma centre in Canada. Dr. Donovan was recognized for teaching excellence in 2010 with the E.L. Lansdown Award for Best Teacher in the Residency Program at the University of Toronto, among 120 radiologists. Her work in radiology resident education has also been recognized with an RSNA educational grant to evaluate training opportunities for residents to develop their teaching skills during residency training. This is her first book.

Well known in the USA, Canada, and internationally, Dr. Mark Schweitzer spent 1998 to 2003 at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, where at various times he was the Chief of Radiology, Director of Radiology Informatics, Director of Outpatient Imaging, Associate Chair, and Vice Chair for Clinical Practice. In 2003, Dr. Schweitzer went to New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases as Chief of Radiology. He was also a Professor of Radiology and Orthopedic Surgery, Director of Musculoskeletal Radiology at New York University. In the fall of 2008, Dr. Schweitzer joined the Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa as Chief of Radiology and Chair of Radiology. Dr. Schweitzer has 265 peer-reviewed papers, 65 book chapters, 2 books, and has been invited to over 500 lectures. His research interests include Functional MSK Imaging, Cartilage, Tendon Pathophysiology, and Shape analysis.
