UNESCO has long designated "world heritage sites" that are part of the legacy of all humanity. These can be buildings, monuments or even whole towns. In response to protests from several countries, particularly in the Southern hemisphere, the UN recently passed a resolution to protect intangible heritage as well. Smith (cultural heritage studies, York University, UK) and Akagawa (Cultural Heritage Centre for Asia and the Pacific, Deakin University, Melbourne) present articles explaining the process of establishing the criteria for intangible heritage and the ongoing debates surrounding the term. How does one decide what intangible heritage is? Is it language, customs, rituals, attitudes or even traditional meeting places? These questions are still not resolved. The mere fact of making a list is open to debate. This complex volume should be required reading for students of international relations, anthropology and sociology. By focusing on the laborious process of coming to an international agreement and in pointing out the charged political issues, this book causes the reader to reconsider what true heritage consists of.
