This book presents a series of illustrative cases to highlight the decision-making process in pursuing an interventional management strategy and the procedural details of performing catheter-based interventions in patients with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD). Each case provides a brief prior history of the patient, summary of current symptoms, pertinent physical examination findings, key imaging findings used to determine the indication for intervention as well as the technical feasibility of a transcatheter intervention. Potential management options and the rationale for why a transcatheter intervention was the optimal management strategy, and post-procedure management strategies are also discussed.

Interventions in Adult Congenital Heart Disease: A Case-Based Approach provides a practical guide to successfully implementing a range of cardiac intervention management strategies, and is valuable resource for all cardiology practitioners and trainees seeking an up-to-date resource on the topic.

Dr. Vaikom Mahadevan is a world-renowned expert in interventional cardiology for treating adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) and structural heart disease. He has extensive experience in performing adult congenital and transcatheter valve procedures, including replacing all four of the heart's valves. He also has a strong interest in intracardiac echocardiography (ultrasound imaging inside the heart). Dr. Mahadevan's research interests include transcatheter valve implantation and pulmonary hypertension in ACHD. Dr. Mahadevan earned his medical degree from Stanley Medical College in Chennai, India, and received further training in internal medicine and cardiology in the United Kingdom. He completed a fellowship in adult congenital heart disease and intervention at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London as a British Heart Foundation advanced fellow, followed by a fellowship in the same specialties at Toronto General Hospital. Before joining the University of Massachusetts as the Chief of Cardiology,  Dr. Mahadevan was previously the Director of Structural and Adult Congenital Cardiac Interventions and the William W Parmley Chair in Cardiology for over 8 years. Prior to that he served as a cardiology Consultant and interventionist at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, part of Central Manchester University Hospitals. He was director of the ACHD and transcatheter aortic valve replacement program in Manchester, and he directed the ACHD interventional program for the Northwest of England. He also established and led the adult congenital pulmonary hypertension service for this region.
