Japan is an archipelago of more than 6,800 islands. It's culture is a rich blend of Asian traditions and Western influences demonstrated in the country's democratically elected government but oldest hereditary monarchy. Japan is home to many successful high-tech industries which have contributed to the rapid pace of industrialization. However, problems of pollution and overcorwding, together with an ageing population present Japan with challenges for the future.
