A portrait of U.S. Marine Corps gunnery sergeant John Basilone describes his heroic actions at the Battle of Henderson Field in World War II Guadalcanal and his posthumous receipt of both the Navy Cross and Medal of Honor. Simultaneous eBook.

A nonfiction chapter book about the heroic actions of John Basilone, a U.S. Marine in the Pacific theatre of WWII, part of Michael P. Spradlin's Medal of Honor series.

John Basilone (1916–1945) was a U.S. Marine Corps gunnery sergeant.

In October 1942, he took part in the Battle of Henderson Field in Guadalcanal. After Japanese forces left Basilone's battalion with only two men standing and critically low on ammunition, he single-handedly battled his way through hostile lines to deliver shells to his gunners, enough to virtually annihilate the enemy forces.

Later killed in action on the first day of the invasion of Iwo Jima, Basilone was World War II's only enlisted Marine to receive both the Navy Cross and the Medal of Honor.

This is the fourth nonfiction middle-grade book in Michael P. Spradlin's Medal of Honor series, which profiles the courage and accomplishments of recipients of the Medal of Honor, the highest and most prestigious personal military decoration, awarded to recognize U.S. military service members who have distinguished themselves through extraordinary acts of valor.
