The conference series 'Landscape: a synthesis of diachronic elements' began in 2019, and this volume collects the proceedings of its fourth edition, titled Planning and the Ancient World: Between the Dogmas of the Past and Recent Interpretations, held in Lecce from May 25 to 26, 2023, with the support of the University of Salento and the Laboratory of Ancient Topography and Photogrammetry. The volume aims to provide a more accurate reconstruction of the ancient landscape through a comparison between the research of young scholars and that of more experienced figures, offering an overview of the current state of research and the methods applied in various archaeological contexts around the Mediterranean.

G. D'Alessio obtained a Master's degree in Classical World Urban Planning from the University of Roma Tre, with a thesis titled "Techniques of Surveying in Comparison: The Case of Ponte Loreto". He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Salento, focusing on the analysis of ancient architectural structures and surveying through photomodeling and laser scanning.
S. De Nisi obtained a Master's degree in Archaeology from the University of Pisa and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Cultural Heritage Sciences at the University of Salento. His research interests lie in the field of remote sensing applied to archaeology, with a particular focus on non-invasive investigative techniques for understanding ancient landscapes, both urban and rural.
C. Felici obtained a Master's degree in Archaeology from the University of Siena and is currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Texts, Contexts, and Sources from Antiquity to the Contemporary Age at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio. His research interests focus on landscape archaeology and ancient topography, with particular attention to the use of non-invasive techniques for the reconstruction of the ancient landscape.
D. Gangale Risoleo obtained a Ph.D. in Ancient Sciences and Archaeology from the University of Pisa and was a research fellow at the University of Calabria. He is currently an archaeologist at the Superintendency ABAP for the provinces of Catanzaro and Crotone. His research interests lie in the tradition of Ancient Topography studies, with a particular focus on the analysis of the relationship between water and urban planning.
S. Pesce obtained a Master's degree in Archaeology from the University of Bari and a Specialization Diploma in Archaeological Heritage from the University of Salento. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Cultural Heritage Sciences at the University of Salento. Her research interests lie in spatial archaeology and ancient topography, combining traditional methods with the application of the latest digital techniques.
I. Raimondo obtained a Ph.D. in Ancient Sciences and Archaeology from the University of Pisa and is currently working as an archaeologist designer at a railway infrastructure company. Her research interests are rooted in the tradition of Ancient Topography studies, with a particular focus on road systems
