Led Zeppelin, II, III, IV, Houses of the Holy, Physical Graffiti, Presence, In Through the Out Door and Coda these are the sacred texts written and expertly executed by Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham that made Led Zeppelin one of the most reveredand commercially massivebands of all time. In Led Zeppelin A Visual Biography, Martin Popoff, author of Led Zeppelin: All the Albums, All the Songs and Robert Plant: Album by Album, delivers one of his meticulous and detailed reference-styled timelines, charting the history of this esteemed UK institution, from its inception to the bands posthumous last album, the Coda compilation, issued in 1982. But of course, the chronological history is just the start. The main driving force behind the project is housed within the titling. In that spirit, what this elegant coffee table book proposes to do is chart the explosive live stage history of the band, along with the iconic albums and their attendant pioneering cover arts. Tour posters, backstage passes, 45 sleeve and enigmatic record ads combine to complete this symphony of design and colour, turning the book into a visual feast that coexists with Popoffs scholarly marking of the bands many milestones.
At approximately 7,900 (with over 7,000 appearing in his books), Martin has unofficially written more record reviews than anybody in the history of music writing across all genres. Additionally, Martin has penned around 80 books on hard rock, heavy metal, classic rock and record collecting. He was Editor In Chief of the now retired Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles, Canada's foremost metal publication for 14 years, and has also contributed to Revolver, Guitar World, Goldmine, Record Collector, bravewords.com, lollipop.com and hardradio.com, with many record label band bios and liner notes to his credit as well. Additionally, Martin has been a regular contractor to Banger Films, having worked for two years as researcher on the award-wining documentary Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage, on the writing and research team for the 11-episode Metal Evolution and on the ten-episode Rock Icons, both for VH1 Classic. Additionally, Martin is the writer of the original metal genre chart used in Metal: A Headbanger's Journey and throughout the Metal Evolution episodes. Martin currently resides in Toronto and can be reached through martinp@inforamp.net or www.martinpopoff.com.
