This book covers the current know-how on lignin, its sustainable isolation from lignocellulose, characterization of the isolated lignin, and transforming it to add value. The book is divided into three sections. A section on lignin isolation elaborates the well-established commercial delignification methods, including recent developments. The lignin characterization section includes traditional methods based on wet chemistry and advanced characterization techniques. It covers lignin value addition with the possibility of transforming lignin into functional materials, backed by figures and graphical presentations.

Features:

  • Provides exclusive information on lignin isolation, including conventional processes as well as recent advances,
  • Covers reaction mechanisms, kinetics, mass transfer, and unit operations, including all aspects of laboratory-based lignin characterization,
  • Focuses on lignin as a starting material for obtaining functional materials,
  • Discusses the current state of advancement of lignin value addition.

This book is aimed at researchers, professionals, and graduate students in chemical engineering and industrial chemistry.

This book covers the current state of know-how on lignin, its sustainable isolation from lignocellulose, characterization of the isolated lignin, and transforming it further to add value. It is arranged into three sections dealing, respectively, with lignin isolation from lignocellulose, lignin characterization, and lignin value addition.

1. Introduction
2. Lignin isolation through dissolution from lignocelluloses
3. Separation of dissolved lignin from solution
4. Other methods of lignin isolation
5. Physicochemical characterization of lignin
6. Spectroscopic characterization of lignin
7. Thermochemical characterization of lignin
8. Value added carbons from lignin
9. Value added polymer applications of lignin
10. Value added low molecular weight organics from lignin

Himadri Roy Ghatak earned his BE and ME degrees from the erstwhile University of Roorkee (now Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee) and his PhD from Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology. He worked in the industry from 1991 to 1995 before joining the faculty of Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology, where he rose to the position of a professor in chemical engineering. He also served as the head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, and associate dean (research and consultancy). He has taught courses in chemical reaction engineering, mass transfer, environmental engineering, and energy technology. Professor Ghataks research focuses on electrochemical advanced oxidation, hydrogen production and lignin.
