This treatment manual draws on research to show how group cognitive behavioral therapy can help menopausal women manage their hot flashes and night sweats. It introduces menopause, its symptoms, and the cognitive behavioral model for hot flashes, as well as assessment for group therapy and setting up sessions. It contains six sessions related to psychoeducation and the rationale for the cognitive behavioral model; stress management, improving well-being, and identifying precipitants; managing hot flashes; managing night sweats and improving sleep; and reviewing progress and maintaining changes. In addition to addressing those experiencing natural menopause, it includes advice for women who have had menopause after surgery or medical treatment, who have symptoms following treatment for breast cancer, who cannot use hormone replacement therapy, or who are experiencing premature menopause. Myra Hunter is Professor of Clinical Health Psychology at the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College London. She has worked in the area of womens health for over 30 years and has over 150 publications including six books. Her research on menopause has established her as an international expert in the field.



Melanie Smith is a clinical psychologist, who has specialised in helping people to manage physical health conditions using cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). She researched and provided the CBT for women with hot flushes in the MENOS trials at Kings College London and is currently with Salford Pain Centre, Manchester.
