Exotic companion animals are becoming increasingly popular and recognized as a speciality within veterinary medicine, contend Mitchell (College of Veterinary Medicine, U. of Illinois, Urbana) and Tully (School of Veterinary Medicine, Louisiana State U., Baton Rouge) in introducing this text. Following introductory chapters on the keeping of exotic pets and preparation of a veterinary hospital for treating animals from invertebrates to wild bird and mammals, contributors discuss breeds commonly kept as pets, their anatomy and physiology, husbandry, restraint, nutritional needs, preventive medicine, physical examination for common diseases, diagnostic testing, treatments, regulations, and the prevention of zoonoses, transmission of diseases to humans. The 19 chapters include professional exotic species associations, radiographic images, and suggested reading. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

The only book of its kind with in-depth coverage of the most common exotic species presented in practice, this comprehensive guide prepares you to treat invertebrates, fish, amphibians and reptiles, birds, marsupials, North American wildlife, and small mammals such as ferrets, rabbits, and rodents. Organized by species, each chapter features vivid color images that demonstrate the unique anatomic, medical, and surgical features of each species. This essential reference also provides a comprehensive overview of biology, husbandry, preventive medicine, common disease presentations, zoonoses, and much more. Other key topics include common health and nutritional issues as well as restraint techniques, lab values, drug dosages, and special equipment needed to treat exotics.

  • Brings cutting-edge information on all exotic species together in one convenient resource.
  • Offers essential strategies for preparing your staff to properly handle and treat exotic patients.
  • Features an entire chapter on equipping your practice to accommodate exotic species, including the necessary equipment for housing, diagnostics, pathology, surgery, and therapeutics.
  • Provides life-saving information on CPR, drugs, and supportive care for exotic animals in distress.
  • Discusses wildlife rehabilitation, with valuable information on laws and regulations, establishing licensure, orphan care, and emergency care.
  • Includes an entire chapter devoted to the emergency management of North American wildlife.
  • Offers expert guidance on treating exotics for practitioners who may not be experienced in exotic pet care.

Recenzijos

The stated aim of this 546-page text is to allow you to treat all exotic pets confidently, using the most cutting-edge information and all within one comprehensive resource. The pages are all glossy and there are over 400 colour pictures and the page edges are colour coded to allow the relevant sections to be readily accessed. The first two chapters give an introduction to the subject and help in preparing the veterinary surgery to treat these patients. The rest of the nineteen chapters each cover a separate species or linked group of species. This is a book that will fi nd a place in my own library. It is certainly worth considering if you only intend to have one book on exotic pets, and is a good and reasonably comprehensive introduction to the subject. If you have an interest in one particular species or group of species then there are more specialist texts available, and this is recognised by the authors, who do provide guidance on further reading. - European Journal of Companion Animal Practice, August 2008 This practical, user-friendly resource provides essential informationn on the care and treatment of the most common exotic pets presented in practice. The colour images in this manual as well as the numerous tables on drugs makes this book very practical to use for students and veterinarians working with exotic pets. - European Association of Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians, July 2008
