Twenty chapters written by specialists in the US, Canada, India, and Europe, consider some of the major pulmonary diseases in which reactive oxygen/nitrogen species, or RONS, are an important element. Initial chapters discuss the generation and reactions in the lung of RONS, and oxidative stress and antioxidant status in health and disease. Among the chapter topics are the role of RONS as mediators of lung inflammation, pulmonary complications of chronic granulomatous disease, influence of mineral dust surface characteristics, asbestosis and asbestos-related cancers, ozone-induced lung injury, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and vanadium- and chromium-induced cell signal transduction.
