In keynote addresses for the gathering O. T. Gudmestad (U. of Stavanger, Norway) discussed risk concepts for optimal hydrocarbon production and K. Traa, a consultant in Stavanger, considered the efficient use of energy. Another 23 papers explore other technical topics relating to resource extraction and application, both in Kurdistan and elsewhere. Among them are the efficiency and emissions of sunflower biodiesel, challenges of cutting transport in micro-borehole coiled tubing drilling for mineral exploration, the origin of lateral thrust in the Maway area of Kurdistan, simulating kerosene-water two-phase flow in vertical and inclined pipes, and the potential for using treated petroleum drill cuttings in mine backfill. There is no subject index. The US office of WIT Press is Computational Mechanics. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

The Kurdistan region of Northern Iraq is one of the emerging areas in the Middle East, rich in oil, gas and mineral resources as well as underground water. However, until recently the political and security issues were such that the region was unable to take advantage of these resources. Nowadays Kurdistan is emerging as one of the fastest developing areas in the Middle East with its universities playing a major role in this process. This book contains the proceedings of the First International Conference on Petroleum and Mineral Resources, held at Koya University in Kurdistan, Iraq. Topics covered include Petroleum Exploration; Drilling and Well Design; Gas Production; Petrochemical Engineering; Geological Structures; Metal Ore Extraction; Resource and Production Engineering; Multiphase Flow; Processing of Oil and Gas; Hydrocarbon Transportation; Pipelines; Field Support Facilities; Project Development and Management; Safety Management; Environmental Management; Operation Economics and Investment; Regulations and Legislation; Corrosion, Infrastructure Protection
