In this reprint from 1967, Ranganathan (library science and mathematics, Presidency College, Madras, India) presents a biography of forgotten Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887-1920). It focuses on his life rather than his mathematical achievements (although one chapter discusses his ideas) and tells of how he came from a poor family, how he mastered Loney's Trigonometry at the age of 13, his employment at the U. of Madras and the U. of Cambridge, his personality and religious philosophy, his notebooks of theorems and results, and how some of his work came from visions. The book includes reminiscences of several contemporaries. Distributed in North America by ISBS. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
