A photographic account of the city of San Francisco, accompanied by essays by well-known San Franciscans (including columnist Herb Caen and novelist Herbert Gold). There are selected historical black and white photographs of the city. The book celebrates both the familiar and the out-of-the-way, the traditional and the avant-garde. Beebe's camera captures a glittering Chinese New Year's dragon and cable cars creeping up Hyde Street, a North Beach saloon and houseboats in Sausalito, Victorian houses and monolithic office buildings, colourful parades and the ballet. Also included is information on the newly-designated Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
