Print (civics and citizenship education, U. of Sydney, Australia) and Lange (civic education, Leibniz U. Hanover, Germany) draw together nine essays by education researchers from Europe who participated in a symposium in Hanover, Germany, in 2011. They essays consider how schools and the school curriculum can contribute to building democratic citizens and how to translate key competencies into school-based activities, especially in Europe. They address issues in citizenship education and approaches to teacher pedagogy, including learning in projects, curriculum frameworks, the role of peer pressure in citizenship, the impacts of specific models on citizenship outcomes, the role of values, the lack of training of teachers, service learning, specific pedagogies, and the link between teacher competencies and student competencies.
