As the Director General and Chief Executive of the Chemical and Biological Defense Establishment at Porton Down from 1984 to 1995, Pearson (international security, U. of Bradford, Britain) was directly involved in ensuring that the British armed forces were effectively protected against the threat that chemical or biological weapons might be used against them. He was also involved in some of the negotiations for international chemical and biological weapons conventions. He describes the four phases in the search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq beginning in 1984 and continuing. One can only attribute his neglect of George Bushs search under his desk to national chauvinism. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) This book tells the story of the UNs attempts to monitor and control the development of Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq from the first Gulf War to the continuing search for them today. The non-disclosure and non-cooperation of Iraq in this process led the Allies to war in 2003 and the search for WMD after the deposition of Saddam Hussein has caused acute political embarrassment. Graham Pearson draws out the lessons that can be learned from the experience in Iraq for the control of weapons programs in other rogue states, and the lessons for the UN themselves. Recenzijos

'I can think of no better individual than Graham Pearson to write an authoritative account of the search for WMD in Iraq...in order to identify relevant conclusions relating to inspection, verification and non-proliferation of such weapons.' - From the Foreword by Charles A. Duelfer, Special Advisor of Strategy Regarding Iraqi Weapons of Mass Destruction

'Graham Pearson has applied his great skill, discipline and experience as a scientist in examining the search for WMD in Iraq. No book on the subject so far has greater depth, detail and documentation. His conclusions will be valuable not only when we judge the inspections in Iraq but also when we discuss how verification should be designed to best serve current and future arms control regimes.' - Dr. Hans Blix, Executive Chairman UNMOVIC 2000-03, Director General Emeritus IAEA

'This volume will be the definitive source on the efforts to find these weapons and the lessons for inspection, verification and non-proliferation will be vital for strengthening the international regimes totally prohibiting chemical and biological weapons in the 21st Century.' - Professor Joshua Lederberg, Nobel Laureate, President Emeritus, Rockefeller University, USA
