The senses guide us through urban landscapes, animal connections and familial bonds as we consider who we are, where we are--both physically and metaphysically--and what truly matters. This is a collection that is particularly concerned with how place determines so much of us, how the city pulses within us, carrying the momentum of heartbeats, of blood racing, of that moment of feeling deeply alive. It attempts to explore the mess of it all, the trash, the litter and graffiti, the bodies moving and thriving, flailing and failing--and living. Sensorial meanders through streets and metros, shopping malls and parks, restaurants and museums, beaches and country, in the same way we navigate emotions, loss, love and light. It is about the process of exploring and connecting--to place but also to others. It grapples with where we've come from, with history and with family legacy. Ultimately, Sensorial proposes one set of responses to the never-ending data we process as we steer through our lives. In particular, it considers aging and illness on the journey towards life's end--and examines gain and loss in the aggregate. Sensorial was written over several years, during which the author drew on some of her own experiences but also carefully observed and interpreted her environment, often intentionally putting herself in awkward or uncomfortable situations to develop new perspectives. Travel, academic research and journalistic interviews also informed her writing."--
