Petty went to Ireland in 1652 as Physician to the Army, became very rich, and contributed to both science and politics in 17th-century colonial Ireland. Jordan (emeritus child development, U. of Missouri-St. Louis) offers a biography of him. Among his achievements were the down Survey of the middle 1660s, The Political Anatomy of Ireland and other works, and establishing the Dublin Philosophical Society.
