This amply illustrated reference for pediatric orthopedists is an updated consolidation of two prior books: Operative Management of Lower Extremity Fractures in Children, and Operative Management of Upper Extremity Fractures in Children, published in 1992 and 1994, respectively. The current book reflects recent advances such as the use of flexible nailing for femur and forearm fractures, the development of minimally invasive plating techniques, and the debate on the timing of surgery for supracondylar humerus fractures and open fractures. Each chapter on fractures of different bones follows a similar format, with information on anatomy, mechanism of injury, classification, evaluation, and details on nonsurgical and surgical treatment and surgical techniques. There are also notes on acceptable radiographic and clinical parameters, post-operative protocols, and complications. The book is illustrated with b&w diagnostic images on every page. Scherl teaches pediatric orthopedics at the University of Nebraska. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
