Best practices, guidelines and standards help understand how a usable online social network is created. Various implementation techniques and platforms, their advantages and limitations in facilitating the selection of the appropriate platform for the implementation of the online social network are described. Visualization techniques are examined to act as the cornerstone for the designers/developers to enhance the visual representation of the social network of their end users. Finally, usability evaluation techniques are presented to help assess the usability of their online social networks and improve the user experience. The future trends in the design and use of social networks are also presented.
