Carthoris, son of the Warlord of Mars and the incomparable Dejah Thoris, travels to the court of Thuvan Dihn to proclaim his love to the fair Thuvia, Princess of Ptarth, only to leave dejected when he finds she is promised to another. But the Prince of Heliums troubles are only beginning, for when unknown raiders seize Thuvia, Carthoris becomes the chief suspect. While attempting to return to Ptarth and clear his name, his flier is sabotaged, and he finds himself carried across the desolate wastes to the ancient city of Lothar.
