This volume, the second of Marcuse's collected papers, focuses on his critical theory of contemporary society, in particular his analyses of technology, capitalism, the fate of the individual, and the prospects for social change in contemporary society. It includes some of his most important unpublished manuscripts from the late 1960s and early 1970s. The introduction by Kellner (philosophy of education, UCLA) situates Marcuse's work in the context of his development of a critical theory of society and his relationship to the Frankfurt School. The afterword by a close friend of Marcuse's reflects on his continuing relevance and importance in the present era. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
