This story-based course comprehensively prepares learners for the outcomes relevant to the Foundation Phase of the Language, Literacy and Communication learning area. It has been thoroughly tested in a variety of South African schools for its suitability in multi-lingual classrooms, and is integrated across all learning areas. Real-life situations to engage learners in active storytelling will help develop their speaking, listening, viewing, reading and writing skills across the curriculum. At the same time, they will learn language structures and conventions appropriate to these situations and contexts. The Learner's Books focus on viewing, listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and develop concepts and skills through the stories in each unit. The Activity Books offer extension activities which are designed to encourage fine motor skills. Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria are suggested in the Teacher's Books, which also provide assessment guidelines and copymasters. Poster-sized, colour storybooks in the form of Big Books introduce the stories.
