The island is not physically part of the larger island of Tasmania, but off the south coast of Australia, at the tip of Cape Jervis near Adelaide. The people are Tasmanian, however, and Taylor (U. of Melbourne) traces their history in the shadow of European colonization from the early 19th century to the early 21st. The most significant change from the 2002 first edition has been restoring the true names of five of the six colonial families that have dominated the island, explaining that the memory and attitudes of living descendants have altered enough that they can be identified. An epilogue has also been added. The price is converted from AU$. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
