Macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy are not inevitable, but they are likely to cause some degree of vision loss as people age. In this collection of 11 papers contributors describe how nursing practice relates to reduced vision in the elderly. They describe the causes of vision loss and the impact it can have on a person who is accustomed to normal vision, the stigma of vision loss, risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis and medical management of the most common conditions, prevention measures, pharmacological therapies, social and psychological impacts, vision assessment, models of care in a variety of settings and care in emergencies. They also describe ways to support families and locate assistive devices and resources. They conclude with information on possible future medical interventions.
