The programs in French, German, Italian, Russian and European Studies at the University of California, Irvine merged to become the Department of European Languages and Studies in order to focus on the history, culture, politics, and coherence and incoherence of Europe as a whole. To celebrate, a symposium was held in March 2013, and 10 papers were selected for publication here. The topics include the European crisis and the idea of unification in the German public, versions of European statehood in the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia, pluri-lingualism and language education in Europe, European visions in Albert Camus' abolitionism, and world literature and European languages.
