"Advocating for a child who learns differently can sometimes feel like an isolating and daunting task. This book reminds families that they are not alone. "When Your Child Learns Differently" is a compassionate guide to help families navigate special education services from the inside out. Drawing on experiences as both a parent and special education teacher, the author shares valuable information about special education language, policy, procedures, and supports while reminding families that they are the most important advocates in their child's success plan. Accessible and encouraging, this guide humanizes the journey of caring for children who learn differently. Readers will leave the book empowered with practical policy knowledge and energized by thebelief that, with love and high expectations, almost anything is possible"--

Fishman-Weaver, an educator, author, and advocate for student leadership, offers a guide meant to help families navigate special education services. She discusses the ideas, experiences, and perspectives that have shaped her advice for caring for children who learn differently, key policies and terms related to the special education and identification processes, and the Individualized Education Program meeting; aspects related to advocacy, including using a strengths-based approach, the positive difference that being "raised on love" makes in child development, and the role of inclusion; and how to operationalize high expectations in reading and math. She also addresses the concept of exceptionality; what it means to learn differently; the concepts of neurodiversity, representation, and disproportionality; special populations, including twice-exceptional students and English language learners; and navigating parenting, the importance of community, and self-care.
